Please Support Odyssey of the Mind!
Why are we fundraising?
This year, we had one BMS team place 1st at the CT State Championships for their chosen problem! This is the 3rd year in a row that this team has been invited to attend the World Finals Competition. They are a group of 7 energetic 6th grade boys.
The competition is being held at Michigan State University May 22-26, 2019. Cost per child and parent is approximately $1,700. The BMS team of seven 6th graders equals $12,000. Your support in getting the team to Michigan is greatly appreciated!
Our goal is to raise $5,000 by May 15th.
The Bethel Education Foundation (BEF) is administering this fundraiser, with all donations going to a designated fund for Odyssey of the Mind. Tax receipts from the BEF will be automatically sent for your generous donation in support of this program.
On behalf of the Bethel Odyssey of the Mind program, we thank you for your support!
What is Odyssey (OOTM)?
"Through the Odyssey of the Mind program, we promote creativity by challenging teams to solve divergent problems, that is, those with more than one solution. By working in teams, participants learn teamwork, the appreciation and understanding of others, and that a group is a more powerful thinking force than an individual. They develop a sense of self-respect and respect for others through preparatory activities such as brainstorming and role-playing" (OOTM Program Guide).
Teams of 5-7 students work together beginning in the fall to solve a problem. They are given a choice of 5 problems, with topics ranging from building vehicles and recreating artistic masterpieces, to building bridges and performing Broadway renditions. Teams must work without the help of adults to come up with solutions.
Who can participate?
All K-12 students in the Bethel Public Schools may participate in the program. This year, we had 10 teams from Berry, Rockwell, Johnson and BMS compete at the Connecticut State Championships on March 16, 2019. Teams that place in the top 2 spots for their chosen problem are invited to compete at the OOTM World Finals Competition.
